The Dwell Angle
Relationship Between the dwel angle with
the breaker contact slot
In conventional ignition systems that still use platinum (breaking point)
there is a platinum slit that affects the size of the dwell angle. There are
two commonly known angles on the vehicle especially on the ignition system,
namely dweel angle and ignition angle. Then what is the understanding of these
two angles? Here's an explanation:
Understanding of Ignition Angle
The ignition angle is
the cam rotation angle of the distributor from when the platinum begins to open
until it begins to open again on the next protrusion of the cam. Which is the
angle of ignition is a blue angle.
Understanding the Dwell Angle
The dwell angle is the turning angle
of the distributor cam formed at the time the platinum begins to close until it
begins to open on the next bulge (red). The dwell angle can also be called the
long angle of platinum closing or the length of the primary current flowing.
Specifications dwell angle on the 4-cylinder engine is 52 plus minus 6 (toyota
kijang). Here is a formula to calculate the dwell angle.
Following the speakers:
Contact The Breaker
Function:
to connect and break the current
flowing to the primary coil, in order to occur induced voltage on the secondary
coil.
1. Kam distributor
2. Fixed contact (tungsten)
3. Contacts off (tungsten)
4. The contact spring breaker
5. Arm breaker contact
6. Screw fastener
8. Cable (from coil)
9. Setup
Small breaker contact gap
· Small opening angle (b)
· Large Dwel angle (a)
Large breaker contact gap
* Large opening angle (b)
* Small Dwel corner (a)
Small Dwel angle -> large breaker
contact latch
Great Dwell angle and ignition capability
The ignition capability is
determined by the strong primary current.
In order to achieve maximum primary
current, a sufficient interruption is required.
Small dwell angle
Short shutdown contact closing time -> Primary current not reaching maximum -> Less ignition capability
•Large dwel angle
Good ignition capability, but the current flows too long * the breaker contacts become hot * the breaker breaks quickly wear out.
Conclusion: The dwel
angle is a compromise between the ignition ability and the breaker contact life

O Timing light
Setting the Platina Gap
1) Prepare tools and materials
2) Unscrew the distributor
3) Check for platinum slits, if burnt or hollow, platinum
should be replaced
4) Platel slit and block gap block (platinum ebonite):
0.45mm
Installing Timing Light and Reading at Ignition
Installing Timing Light and Reading at Ignition
See flashing strobe lights on the
coil / sign on the crankshaft pulley
O dwell angle: 52⁰ ± 2⁰
6) Check the ignition time and set the engine rotation
on idle rotation. The Octan selector must be set to the default position
O at ignition: at 750 + 50 rpm, 2K, 3K, 4K series; 8⁰ before TMA
7) Stel when ignition and match the time signs by
rotating the body distributor
O when ignition machine series 2K, 3K, 4K: 8⁰ before TMA
8) Check the workings of the governor with the terms;
O the rotor must return shortly after the rotor is
rotated clockwise and removed
9) Start the engine and remove the vacuum hose from
the distributor. Time marks change according to the engine speed.
CONCLUSION
The dwel angle is the angle of the long platinum
contact closing,
And corresponds to the breaker contact slot, Large
Dwell angle and ignition capability for the engine to run with this ignition
adapter
